Tom Cruise continues working hard, stays in shape and appears on the screen either as Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible” or as Jack Reacher, as it is now. Therefore, it is not necessarily the case that average viewers can easily tell the difference between them, but it is Reacher’s personal touch in the new film about his adventures that is specified in the review of Re:plika.
If you watched the first Jack Reacher movie in 2012, then you should remember that Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is former military policeman, man of principle, who always stands for truth and justice. Therefore, he tries not to communicate with other people, moves from place to place all the time, tries to be unnoticed and conceals where he is and why. In general, he is a kind of recluse in the thick of a crowd. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” has similar storyline, but now Reacher is forced to cooperate with two ladies. Of course, it is due to the circumstances and against his will. More specifically, he cooperates with a female Army major, Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) and a young girl Samantha (Danika Yarosh), who might completely change his life, both past and future.
The point is that Major Susan Turner heads Reacher’s old investigative unit and in the process of sharing experiences they flirt with each other by phone. Then she is arrested for treason just when Reacher comes to invite her to a dinner that he promised. Needless to say, he immediately understands that Susan is not guilty and he must break her out of prison and uncover the truth. And there he faces military elite, disappeared weapons, black market, continuous assassinations and everything else.
The first thing you may be interested in the sequel to “Jack Reacher” is the name of film director, after a kind of predictable, banal and a little surprising first part. Edward Zwick, who had directed “Blood Diamond” and worked with Tom Cruise on “The Last Samurai”, was invited to the director's chair (Cruise is also a producer) after Christopher McQuarrie, who had directed the first part of “Jack Reacher”, started shooting next “Mission: Impossible” (like excellent grandmaster, Cruise moves chess pieces on his producer’s chessboard). And something tells us that without Zwick this movie would have been even more faded and dreary.
In addition to Zwick, this film is rescued by the fact that it is based on a literary work. The author of action-packed novels Lee Child presented Reacher’s adventures some time ago. These books were very successful and resulted in a series. Therefore, it is absolutely no wonder that Hollywood decided to shoot the film at first and then to run a franchise (now there are rumors about the series, where John Krasinski will play the role of Jack Reacher). Nevertheless, interesting plot twists and certain development of the characters appear in the film despite the fact that the whole story is very predictable and takes place in line with clichés of this genre. An interesting detail is that the author of novels appears in the film as a security agent who lets Reacher pass on the flight by stolen documents. Admittedly, it is very funny moment of the movie (maybe even the funniest).
Yes, in the sequel authors tried to bring a little more humor than it was in the first part. It is not always appropriate, sometimes it is rather comic attempts, but without these moments the film would be even more boring. But the most radical thing (if it is possible to say so, describing this incredibly predictable film) is that in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” there is more feminine energy. And now it is not just shading role of Rosamund Pike from the prequel (nice, but nothing more). Now the woman is practically equivalent to Reacher. She is able to give all the enemies a bloody nose, but at the same time she does not turn into a kind of man despite the fact that she is in military service. Cobie Smulders copes with this task and looks great both in military uniform and in tight-fitting T-shirt. In addition, she discloses problems that the woman faces in the army, namely sexual harassing, distrust and minimization of responsibility due to stereotypical perception of gender insecurity. Dashing energy and embarrassments are brought by the role of Danika Yarosh, whose character is designed to ruin plans and conventionalities (as far as it is possible in such a film).
However, in any case “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” is a benefit performance of the excellent physical form of Tom Cruise (it must be noted - not of his acting talent, because there is nothing to play in this movie, in fact). So if you miss him or simply like movies about cool dudes – safely go to the cinema. In all other cases it is hardly worth wasting your time. Anyway, who would involve Cruise in hilarious comedy? That would be a reason to go to the cinema!
