Political scientist and international relations expert Anton Kuchukhidze expresses his opinion on preferences and interests of Ukrainians in the US presidential race (according to the results of Research & Branding Group survey).
The fact that 61% of the population is not interested in the US presidential election is absolutely logical, because Ukrainians are more worried about domestic issues today. Over the past two years the standard of living in Ukraine has been constantly falling, that is why people's attention is focused on more urgent challenges: unemployment, tariff raising, low-income level, increase in food prices, etc.
But the fact that 31% of respondents are interested in the US elections is mainly caused by mass media coverage of the US role in providing Ukraine economic and humanitarian support, as well as by the level of US involvement in domestic policy processes of Ukraine, including actualization of the Minsk agreements implementation.
It is evident that the candidate H. Clinton has more followers than Mr. Trump due to her popularity among the population of Ukraine. The second aspect is how the mass media work in Ukraine - Mr. Trump is mainly presented as pro-Russian candidate and Mrs. Clinton is presented as a politician that will put pressure on Russia because of the situation in Ukraine.
The mass media of our country form this reality and pro-government politicians also like playing up to these sentiments. This state of affairs may be called a simple political technology because the fact that Mrs. Clinton as Secretary of State was one of the main ideologists of restarting relations and partnership with Russia is hardly mentioned in Ukrainian information space. One more fact is also omitted: no matter what the US presidential candidates may say during their election campaign, each of them defend their own national interests.
