Turkey – Ukraine: revolution contact?

Mass protests on Taksim square in Istanbul roused the Ukrainian Internet-space. In the social networks they started admiring the activity of Turkish youth in eager rivalry and fitting the situation in the beloved by many Ukrainians for its perfects resorts country to the domestic reality. I think it’s vainly.

It will be recalled that there was the “orange revolution” in Ukraine, the disappointment in it was not weaker than the effect of the peaceful protest of hundred thousand people in the late autumn 2004. Particular enthusiasts have already tried to fit to our country the events of the “Arabic spring” as the protests on Taksim have raised hopes in their breast.

Although there is a recipe of transfer of the revolution situation from one country to another, as the supporters of the conspiracy theory state, but it is hardly applicable to Ukraine today. It is especially childish to expect that the situation in the rapidly developing society Muslim country, where the Kemalism supporters fight against the supporters of Islam strengthening, could be injected into national reality. How it could be done if Ukrainians mainly go to Turkey for holidays, and the Turks prefer sex-tours to our country. It is difficult to create the space for exchange of revolutionary ideas at the expense of tourist migration.

There are some more factors making the transfer of “Taksim spirit” to Ukraine almost impossible. In any revolution situation today the driving force is important, as a rule it is a middle class. In Turkey it is about 30%, and in Ukraine the quantity of the middle class ranges at 10% rate. But the other thing is worth – its representatives are seriously demoralized as they are not called for. In addition in Turkey two thirds of the population are under 35 years old, and this mass of people lively react to changes in social and political life of the country. Ukrainians seem to be slow starters, and the oppositional politicians are building the path of popular indignation explosion closer to the presidential election.

It looks like in the nearest time experts will have to revalue the role of social networks in revolution activity management as in Arabic East and Turkey they have played consolidating and guiding role, and in the posrt-soviet space they act more as a valve for relief of tension in the society.

There is one more nuance. Any crisis is not only a problem but a chance. Ukrainian government should make conclusions from the events on Taksim square not only in the applied issues of using law enforcement officers, but also activate cooperation of Kiev and Ankara. There is sufficient space for mutually beneficial contacts, and the Black Sea should not be a barrier for relations development.
